Every once in a while, if you look, you can find hidden adventures, unique sites, or oddities right in your back yard. This week’s adventure proves that. We have one of the most bizarre houses I’ve ever seen just 15 minutes from downtown Tampa. The Whimzyland Houses in Safety Harbor. Also known to many as, “The Bowling Ball House.”
WhimzeyLand is and has been a work in progress for over 20 years. It is a local landmark for those who live in the Tampa/St. Petersburg area and who like to seek out unusual places. They have a ton of different materials decorating the houses: plexiglas sculptures, paintings, bottle trees, recycled material sculptures, and, of course, bowling balls. The artists, Kiaralinda and Todd, often visit unusual places. This inspired them to paint their house really bright. Then, the ball really got rolling when they went to a flea market and came home with tons of free bowling balls. Since then, the house has slowly evolved into WhimzeyLand.
Kiaralinda and Todd have a unique passion for what they do. This passion has led them to all corners of the world. They are best known for their one-of-a-kind 3-dimensional creations, made from acrylic plastics, paints, beads, sequins, wire, and more. They create unique artwork for people who like whimsy.
Apparently they ran out of room on their property for whimsy, so, as far as I can tell, they bought 2 more houses across the street and have continued the theme. I imagine their neighbors by now, have come to accept the eclectic look their neighbors have brought to their neighborhood.
Personally, the art is not for me, but I’ll admit. It’s hard to walk the grounds without feeling happy. If you’re depressed, I highly recommend hanging out at Whimzyland.
